Only two players in golf could on command hit the golf ball straight.By all accounts, the number is two.Do you know who they were?

 The one most would immediately recognize is Ben Hogan. Moe Norman is the name of the other golfer. Moe is a legend among three generations of tour players. A reclusive Canadian Tour pro, Moe Norman rarely left his home country because of acute feeling of insecurity, but nevertheless made a name for himself among the golfing fraternity.

Like many of you, I have only seen Ben Hogan on video and in the slo-mo footage I have acquired over the years. As a teenager, I saw Moe play several times in Canada and I saw him again much later in his career when he gave clinics around the country.

I was actually a caddy in Moe’s group for two days (I was looping for another pro at the time).

What was their unique gift? Why is it that they were so different?

 Just think what an anomaly they are. Countless men and women have toiled at this game,but only these two could literally hit the ball and, without looking, head straight down the middle of the fairway to play their next shot.

 There is little doubt that Moe was not your everyday personality and was incomprehensible at the best of times.

 He certainly had a gift for clashing with the governing bodies of golf at the best of times.

Few were interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing given the fact that he looked so unorthodox over the ball. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. He was often ignored or dismissed as an aberration incapable of sensibly explaining how he executed his considerable ball striking skills.The best you could get were bits and pieces of insight but nothing comprehensive bordering on a methodology.

Recently, a whole new generation of golf teachers have rediscovered Moe and are now attempting to reconstruct the man’s great swing.

Competing proponents of the real Moe Norman swing have come upon the scene, each proclaiming that they have solved the mystery behind one of the most unique swings in all of golf  . Some of these methods can be more surely described as good marketing hype than sound and useful theory.

 The pretender swings being marketed today lack the power and penetrating ball flight of the original swing. Few of the methods which purport to piggyback on Moe’s move replicate the man’s powerful action through the ball .

 Ever the tinkerer, I have explored these methods and like many of my fellow golfers I experienced a significant reduction of distance in all clubs throughout the bag.

 In my youth, I caddied on one of the minor pro tours. You will recall that Moe and my pro were two thirds of the day’s pairing in a pro event.

 Patience was not Moe’s long suit when it came to the pace of play among pros. He compensated by wandering about chatting to himself when waiting for those ahead to hit or putt out. To compensate for the slow play, Moe often flung balls into a sandtrap and spun them to within two feet of the hole. Clearly he needed to find compensatory activities to dissipate the wealth of energy he exhibited.

 Through the years the stories of Moe’s behaviour and decorum have multiplied to the point that it is now difficult to sift fact from fiction. You have to be a bit suspect when there are now more stories than there were witnesses back in the day! Though it might be difficult to sort fact and fiction,no one disputes Moe’s ball striking. Never have I witnessed a player long past his prime who seemed to have lost so very little of his exquisite talent.

 I saw up close and personal just how unerringly straight Moe Norman was . In the days when exhibitions were up close and personal, I had the chance to shag balls for Moe.It was disappointing that so few people came out that day to see truly one of the greatest ball strikers of this or any era. Throughout the exhibit, ball after ball landed but a few feet from where he motioned us to stand.After each series of balls he would simply wave us to a new location. There is no way you could exaggerate the enormity of this man’s skill.

The contrast in personality between Ben Hogan and Moe Norman could not be greater. Where one struggled to communicate, the other failed to communicate. Though Moe struggled to explain the elements of his great ball striking, Ben Hogan, by contrast, made no concerted attempt to share his secrets with the rest of the golfing fraternity.Mountains of text and video have been assembled in an attempt to explain the Hogan swing. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.

Perhaps to Mr Hogan’s satisfaction, no one has fully revealed the intracacies of his swing. No one presumes to be teaching the comprehensive Hogan action.  It is likely that Hogan would not be dissatisfied with the current state of affairs . Like an Eastern mystic, he advised those who sought his knowledge to find it themselves by digging it out of the dirt. This qualifies as the kind of advice a crusty Calvinist gives to his children.

Hogan didn’t engender warmth of spirit. To be fair, Hogan did not search out these qualities in others.Hogan preserved a studied distance between himself and his world.Hogan was always a distant personality among the players of his era. He is not beloved and embraced like an Arnold Palmer. Hogan seemed to distrust his world and this distrust permeated all his relationships.

Let’s ask again whether there is a perfect golf swing?

With qualification, there is a positive answer . The swing can be described and almost mastered!

What do we mean? Well, without understanding what the human body can and does do, you are at a disadvantage. As well, you must grasp the physics that come to bear on this swinging motion. Is it complex!

Your learning curve can be greatly reduced by finding a great teacher?
 
 Those with likely fewer physical gifts than you have mastered it. Those who are the least bit athletic have accomplished it in as little as two buckets of balls.
