Only two players in golf could on command hit the golf ball straight.Just two.Do you know who they were?
 The first, and best known one was Ben Hogan. Students of the game will recognize the other golfer’s name as Moe Norman. Norman was an underground legend. A reclusive Canadian Tour pro, Moe Norman rarely left his home country because of acute feeling of insecurity, but nevertheless made a name for himself among the golfing fraternity.

I have bucket loads of video and film clips of Ben Hogan, but never saw him in person. Moe, on the other hand, I saw in person several times both during tournament play and at clinics he gave later in his career.

For two days I was in Moe’s group during a tournament in Ontario because I was looping for Alvie Thompson, an accomplished Canadian Tour player in the 1960’s and 70’s.

What was their special gift? What made them special?

But just think of how rare this skill is. Countless men and women have toiled at this game,but only these two could literally hit the ball and, without looking, head straight down the middle of the fairway to play their next shot.

There is little doubt that Moe was not your everyday personality and was incomprehensible at the best of times. He certainly had a penchant for clashing with the governing bodies of golf at the best of times.Because of his eccenticities, Moe struggled to explain the intracacies of his swing. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. Virtally no one was interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing notwithstanding his undeniable skill.It was not unlike trying to learn from a Zen master when you tried to piece together the elements that made Moe’s swing tick.

New theories now abound from an assortment of golf lab rats who are now trying to re-engineer the magic of Moe’s swing. This has spawned the emergence of a number of competing “swing theories”, each purporting to have uncovered the Da Vinci Code that is Moe’s swing  . Some of these methods can be more surely described as good marketing hype than sound and useful theory.

The pretender swings being marketed today lack the power and penetrating ball flight of the original swing. The modern swing theories which purport to capture the essence of Moe’s swing have failed to reproduce for the average player the power of the man through the ball . My colleagues and I have tried these new methods and to a man (and a lady) all have encountered a disturbing loss of distance with every club in the bag.

When I had a strong back and a weak mind, I used to practice the darkest of the dark arts; that of being a caddy on the minor tour(it certainly wasn’t for the money!). You will recall that Moe and my pro were two thirds of the day’s pairing in a pro event. Beyond being a reclusive individual, Moe exhibited the patience of a toddler when it came to the ponderous pace of tournament golf. Often during these long waits Moe would mutter on and repeatedly bounce a ball off his driver or wedge. He would often drop 5 or 6 balls into a bunker on a just played hole and spank them out to keep himself amused. Because he was a bundle of energy, he needed outlets for his nervous tension.

The overlay of myth has now come to shroud the actual behaviour of Moe during his tournament playing days. You have to be more than suspicious if the stories emanate from former tour caddies! The lifestyle stories may have assumed epic proportion and, if they have, they will have caught up to the real legend of Moe’s extraordinary golfing talent. And he continued to amaze and mesmerise galleries and onlookers alike with his unerring prowess well into his senior years.

I can personally attest to the man’s prowess and uncanny accuracy . Because Moe conducted his exhibition up the fairway of a par 4, I had the unique opportunity to shag balls for him.An exhibition that drew sadly only a handful of spectators. With monotonous regularity, each ball he hit about one bounce away from us.After each series of balls he would simply wave us to a new location. It was always hypnotizing to just sit there and revel in the artistry of the man.

The diversity in personality between Ben Hogan and Moe Norman could not be greater. Inasmuch as Moe was eccentric, Ben Hogan was both aloof and dismissive. One man suffered from a failure to connect, the other happily drew a steel curtain around himself.It seems each month some one new comes out of the shadows proclaiming that he has uncovered the mystery that is Hogan. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.

Despite the efforts of the golfing community to reverse engineer the Hogan swing, the mystery prevails. No one presumes to be teaching the comprehensive Hogan action.  Mr. Hogan would likely have wanted it this way . Like an Eastern mystic, he advised those who sought his knowledge to find it themselves by digging it out of the dirt. You could never mistake Ben Hogan as a kindly father determined to patiently share his accumulated knowledge with his offspring.

Hogan viewed life as antagonistic to his interests. Hogan was an island surrounded by inhospitable waters.Hogan preserved a studied distance between himself and his world.So has the perfect golf swing eluded us?

Yes there is a perfect swing . The swing can be described and almost mastered!

Why is that? It is essential that we become aware of what the human body can and cannot do. After understanding physiology, we must understand as well the role that physics play on a body in motion. Sounds complex!

 Even if you have modest athletic talent,you can learn a professional grade swing. Those who are the least bit athletic have accomplished it in as little as two buckets of balls.
