Print this page A golf swing plane is not fixed so you can change it to provide more power or increase your accuracy. Much of the way you perform this will depend on your physique and strength. Generally a more upright swing plane will produce a more accurate shot while a flat swing plane will provide you with a longer hit but much less accuracy. There are many drills you can practice to gain complete control over these two different types of swings.
There are three separate sections to a golf swing; the backswing, the downswing and the follow through. Before you can chose which swing plane to use it is important that you have proper and correct form for your golf swing otherwise you will always have problems with the different swing planes. You can practice good form by videotaping yourself or by swinging in front of a full length mirror.
The body is much more involved with a flat swing plane and the arms will travel a much further distance as they swing completely round the body. Your arms and shoulders need to work together to have a good flat plane. The power that is generated will occur when you swing from the backswing to your front swing. The professionals with the best flat plane swing tend to have excellent stomach and oblique muscles.
An upright swing plane usually has the hands achieve a very high position at to the top of the backswing. Instead of completely swinging round your shoulders the arms will rise up to change the plane. The greater the gap you achieve between your right arm and body than the more upright the swing is.
The upright plane focuses more on accuracy and you will have a more upright position than with the flat plane. The arms and shoulders actually rise up at the top of the back swing so you get a gap between your body and the arms. While the ball will not have as much spin or power in it your shots will be right on target.
You should never try to learn a different swing at the golf course as your game will suffer and you will get very frustrated. To really make progress you want to practice at a driving range or other set up that allows you to observe yourself, your accuracy and power.
These two swing planes are quite different and generally a professional may only use one. It is up to you to choose the best swing for your golf game.
